Rotaract Fund Raiser
If anyone would like to donate money to GRA (Global Rotaract Alumni Club) they can donate the money on the GOSC site and include a note that it is for GRA. This would help us tremendously to continue growing as a club and be able to conduct larger scale projects. Here is the donation link: Donate Now – Global Offsite Care

Opening The Meeting:

Welcome to the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa where we are doing good in Santa Rosa and around the world!

Ann took over from Kris in kicking the meeting off

To the familiar “Tonight’s Going to be a Good Night” by the Black-Eyed Peas, President Julia started the meeting. Kris Anderson led us in the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance and the Four/Five Way Test as Ann Gospe came running in, a few minutes late. She swooped in to give us a few quotes from Reverand Jesse Jackson who passed away the other day.

“Both tears and sweat are salty, but they render a different result. Tears will get you sympathy sweat will get you change”

“America is not like a blanket, one piece of unbroken cloth. America is more like a quilt- many patches, many pieces, many colors, many sizes, all woven together by a common thread.”

“You must not surrender. You may or may not get there but just know that you are qualified and hold on and hold out. We will never surrender. America will get better and better, Keep hope alive.”

Visiting Rotarians:

Edgar – SRJC Rotaract President

Ken Moholt-Siebert and Edgar Nadar Flores

Visitors:

Gary Bayless (a former Rotarian from the West Club) and Melissa Moholt-Siebert

Sunshine Report:

Former member, Bob Higgs (1973 – 2017?) passed away in December. He was a long-time member and club secretary before Jack Abercrombie.

50/50 Drawing:

Fred Levin ran the show today. We started over with 12 marbles and $21 in the pot today. President Julia’s number was called, but she declined the offer. Pete Lescure got the chance to pull the blue marble, but alas, he pulled out one of the yellow marbles.

Joke of the Week with Michael Moore:

(Sometimes, no, often, what Michael says before the joke is just as funny).

This week he gave us two jokes:

Some guys drove their pickup into a lumberyard. One off them walked into the office and said, “We need some four-by-twos.”
The clerk said, “You mean two-by-fours, don’t you”
The man said, “I’ll go check.” and went back to the truck.
He returned a minute later and said, “Yeah, I meant two-by-fours.”
“All right. How long do you need them?” The customer paused for a minute and said, “Uh…I’d better go check.”
After a while, he returned to the office and said, “A long time. We’re gonna build a house.”

GROAN!

Second joke…

On their 25th wedding anniversary, a man took his wife out to dinner. Their teenage daughters said they would have dessert waiting for them when they returned. After they got home, they saw that the dining table was beautifully set with china, crystal and candles, and there was a note that read: “Your dessert is in the refrigerator. We are staying with friends, so go ahead and do something we wouldn’t do!”

“I suppose, “the husband said, “we could vacuum.”

Secret Greeter:

Secret Greeter – Rose

Rose Frances said it was a tough choice because so many said hello to her, but it was Robert Pierce who had a conversation with her about the color purple that won her over today.

The Paul Harris Rotary Rap Video:

Just go to You Tube and type in “Paul Harris Rotary Rap Video.” It was produced by Heber Rotary about three months ago.  As Julia Parranto said, “Now you can all go home and say you watched Rap at Rotary today.”  It is pretty cool!

Announcements:

  1. Casey D’Angelo thanked everyone for delivering “The Book of Why.” and asked that we return the envelopes to him with the extra books, letters and stickers.
  2. Mark Burchill reminded everyone that the social is at his house on Tuesday, February 24 for wine tasting. He has four reservations and can take 12 more.
  3. Debi Zaft reminded all to sign up for the Rotary Squares. The winner will get an instant Paul Harris Award.
  4. Last day to sign up for the fabulous Cloverdale SCARC meeting this month. They have one of the best crab feeds around!
  5. Ray Giampaoli says we can now sign up sponsors on the Giro Bello website. How cool is that!
  6. Edgar announced that the SRJC has some events coming up: A drag show fundraiser on March 24th at the Bertolini Hall at SRJC. They will be helping with a “Newt and Red Belly Frog Rescue” on February 22. They have a suicide prevention walk the first weekend in April at the SRJC campus. They are looking for sponsors.
  7. Rich Rossi says the Santa Rosa Cycling Club needs some volunteers for their bike ride May 2, 2026.

Recognitions:

  1. Many of you remember this moment in your family.  Jeff and Ann Gospe announced that Jacob Gospe now has a driver’s license!  Yoohoo! They donated $100 to Ann’s Paul Harris.
  2. Rose Frances was at Home Depot to get one board that would not fit into her car. She asked the Home Depot clerk about delivery….and just then Ray Giampaoli drove up in his truck! Amazing timing!

Today’s Guest Speaker, Ken Moholt-Siebert on Building a New Round Barn

Ken – today’s presenter

Ken and Melissa Molholt-Siebert became survivors of the Tubbs Fire in 2017 when the fire decimated their home and vineyards. While rebuilding, he became interested in building a new round barn on their property. Ken’s talk today is about building that barn on their property.

Ken is an architect and viticulturist who graduated from the University of Oregon and worked on sustainable and affordable infill design and development in Oregon. So, he has knowledge of design and construction. He used drawings from the Library of Congress to come up with his plans to build his own round barn. Naturally, it was not that easy! Clearing the land, getting power and construction materials to the site was difficult. There were no plans, so he had to improvise as he went along. He has been working on the project when he is not managing the viticulture side of their winery, Ancient Oak Cellars. Sandra, his niece, works with him in her spare time to move the project along.  He is still far from finished. They are having a fund raiser for the roof on Wednesday, March 4th at Homerun Pizza. 15% of the proceeds from that day will be donated.  So come for lunch, order take-out or hang out from 4:00pm – 8:00pm with Ken and the community. (click here for flyer)

A few of Ken’s slides:
