Opening The Meeting

Welcome to the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa where we are “United for Good in Santa Rosa and the World.” says our President Julia Parranto.

Craig Meltzner led is in the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance and the Four-Way Test.  He noted that August 12 is international Youth Day. He read us some quotes on youth.

Banner Exchange:

Lucia Carballo-Hidalgo, our new Rotary Exchange Student for this year, brought us a banner from the Rotary Club of Burgos, Spain.  We look forward to getting to know our new student!  There is an upcoming social at Julie Montgomery and Todd Sheffield’s home soon.

Sunshine Report:

Jeff Kolin just had shoulder surgery. He was at the meeting and is doing fine with Patty’s help.

50/50 Raffle:

$90.00 in the pot today and too many marbles. Our guest, Bob Dees, pulled his own number!  Since he is a Rotarian, we trust that he did not rig the tickets, however he did not pull the blue marble from the bag.  He may have left his $10.00 in the Polio Pail.

Joke of the Week:

Michael Moore said many people have been forwarding jokes to him, many of them clean enough for our meetings. Fred Levin may have been the one who provided this week’s joke.

Rotarian of the Month for July:

President Julia honored Rich Rossi and Robert Pierce as co-Rotarians of the month for their hard work spearheading the Giro Bello. We knew it was going to be a smaller ride this year, but we still did better than expected.

Protein Drive for the Redwood Empire Food Bank:

Please bring canned protein such as chicken, tuna, Spam, etc to all meetings in August. At the end of the month Ray Giampaoli will take what we have to the Food Bank.

Today’s Guest Speaker, Chris Kam, “Award Winning Cinematographer”

You might remember Chris Kam. He made his first appearance at our club two years ago. He was having panic attacks and was not going anywhere. Slowly he started leaving his home and going on short drives to do photography and filming.  This helped him heal and get ready to head off to Chapman College to study film production and cinematography. He showed us the movie he made from this experience. It was very good!

Two years later, he will soon be a junior at Chapman, and he has already won a Student Academy Award for his latest film that he showed us today! “Hole in the Mountain” is about a Canadian company, K-2 Gold that wants to test several sites for gold in an area called Conglomerate Mesa. It is in Inyo County between Mount Whitney and Death Valley. That could lead to a massive open pit mine, not what the local community wants, nor should any of us.
