My Immigration Story

Peter Holewinski

Peter Holewinski

The subject is a compare and contrast of my grandparents’ immigration story, some period of being not in compliance with immigration law in the early 20th C, and how they rectified the situation.

A simply family story that shows how we have changed the harshness of the application of immigration law from then to now.  Non political, family story.

Rotaract Fund Raiser
If anyone would like to donate money to GRA (Global Rotaract Alumni Club) they can donate the money on the GOSC site and include a note that it is for GRA. This would help us tremendously to continue growing as a club and be able to conduct larger scale projects. Here is the donation link: Donate Now – Global Offsite Care

Rotary Club of Santa Rosa

Opening The Meeting:

Mary Graves helps kick off the meeting

As we hear Black-Eyed Peas music, we know it is time to start the meeting! President Julia greeted us all and turned to Mary Graves to lead us in the reciting of The Pledge of Allegiance and Four Way Test.  Her Reflection was the reciting of a prayer from Global Rotaract.

Visiting Rotarians:

Paula Reinhold from the Rotary Club of Rohnert Park and Brian Bauer from the Rotary Club of Sebastopol sunrise.

Visitors and Guests:

Conor Jeffress, Mel Konrad, Malia Nichols and Roger Nichols

Sunshine Report:

Keven Brown’s father, Corrick Brown, passed away at the age of 96.  He was a very well-known (and loved) citizen in our town, running the Santa Rosa Symphony for many years as well as running the store on Fourth Street.  Our best wishes go out to Keven and his family.

50/50 Drawing:

Pete & Paula – 50-50

Pete Lescure said there were seven marbles and $95.00 in the pot today. Guest Paula Rienhold that the ticket but did not pull out the blue marble.  Being a good Rotarian, she put her $10.00 consolation prize in the Polio Pail.

Michael Moore with the Joke of the Day:

An Amish boy and his father were visiting a mall for the first time. They were amazed by almost everything they saw, but absolutely fascinated by the two shiny, silver walls that could move apart and back together again. The boy asked his father, “what is this, father”

The father (never having seen an elevator) responded, “Son, I have never seen anything like this in my life. I don’t know what it is.” While the boy and his father were watching wide-eyed, an old lady in a wheelchair rolled up to the moving walls and pressed a button to the side of them.

The walls opened and the lady rolled between them into a small room. The walls closed, and the boy and his father watched small circles of light with numbers above the wall light up.  They continued to watch the circles light up in the reverse direction. The walls opened up and a beautiful 24-year-old woman stepped out. The father said to his son. “Go get your Mother!”

Malia Nichols is a Guest No More:

Everyone welcomes Malia!

Malia received her red badge.

At last! It was induction day for Malia to join our club! Her husband, Roger Nichols, came today to be with her….nice to meet you, Roger!  Patty Kolin brought her to the club and will be her mentor. Malia is a retired schoolteacher. Her father was a Rotarian, and her mom was in the Junior League.  She is a graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder.  She and Roger have 3 grown children. Roger works at Keysight.  Malia reads a lot!

The Latest on the Ruth Asawa Fountain:

The one-time fountain that was in Courthouse Square, before the renovation, is back in the news. Our club donated funds to get it back into the Square after the renovation, but it did not happen.  Now there is talk of taking the panels and putting them on the base of a stage in the square.  Interesting idea!

Announcements:

  1. There are only 12 squares left on the board.  The winner will get an instant Paul Harris Award.  Squares are only $10.00
  2. The Giro Bello is up to 164 riders and we have sold 12 jerseys. Patty says we have about $30,000 in sponsorships!  The goal is $50,000+. Only 87 more days!
  3. The Elsie Allen Agriculture fundraiser is on April 10th. See Sam McMillan or tickets.
  4. Dan announced the Global Grant for the Haiti water project

Dan Balfe announced that the Global Grant for the Haiti water project was launched today! Dan and our International Committee has been working hard on this project for a very long time.

Recognitions:

  1. Mark Burchill is going to Cuba on a music tour!  Plus, today was his last day at 74, so he donated $75.00 to the club.
  2. Paul Hamilton donated a total $500 to the Legends fund and to the Norm and Bev Owen Fund in honor of Judy Glenn.
