Rotaract Fund Raiser
If anyone would like to donate money to GRA (Global Rotaract Alumni Club) they can donate the money on the GOSC site and include a note that it is for GRA. This would help us tremendously to continue growing as a club and be able to conduct larger scale projects. Here is the donation link: Donate Now – Global Offsite Care
Opening The Meeting:
A little Black Eyed Peas music to start the meeting…
“Welcome to the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa where we continue to do good in our community and the world” says Club President Julia Parranto. Patty Kolin led us in the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance, the Four/Five Way Test and her reflection on this month’s Rotary spotlight: Suicide prevention and global mental health. She ended with some quotes on friendship:
“A friend is someone who knows all about you and still loves you.” Elbert Hubbard
“Friends are the family you choose.” Hubert H. Humphrey
“Friendship is the only cement that will ever hold the world together.” Woodrow Wilson
“No road is long with good company.” Unknown
Visiting Rotarians:
Lance Cottrell, our guest speaker, for the Healdsburg Sunrise Club
Guests of Rotarians:
Dewayne White and Barbara Cottrell, our speaker’s wife AND an author who specializes in horror novels. Might have to have her back to talk about her writing!
Sunshine Report:
All is good!
50/50 Raffle:
Matthew Henry ran the drawing for today. Five marbles and $169 in the pot. He asked Dewayne to pull a ticket. Dewayne pulls his own ticket! DEWAYNE PULLS OUT THE BLUE MARBLE! Isn’t it about time he became a Rotarian?
Michael’s Joke of the Week:
When still a young man, Uncle Harry was told he would live a long-life by adding a little gunpowder to his breakfast every morning. So, every morning for the rest of his life he sprinkled some gunpowder on his morning eggs or corn flakes. The formula seemed to have worked as Uncle Henry lived to be 102 years old. At his death he left four children, 26 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great –grandchildren and a 15-foot hole in the side of the crematorium.
September Birthdays with Keven Brown:
This month birthday babies are Ryan Thomas, Laura Stephens, Eric Butterfield. Doug Chase, and Cecil Humes… and none of them were here today. However, Keven gave Barbara Cottrell a gift card! Does she have a September birthday?
SCARC Report:
Past President Kris Anderson attended the SCARC meeting last week at Charlie’s at the Windsor Golf Course. A good crowd came to mix and mingle. She reported on our Giro Bello Bike Ride. Not much to speak of for the program. Jeff and Patty Kolin were there was Robert Pierce. Charlie’s is temporarily closed to the public. It will be reopening October 1st as Johnny’s Lakeside….or something like that. New ownership.
Announcements:
- Sam read us a card from one of the kids we sponsored from the Junior Livestock Auction. He wants to raise two pigs next ear.
- The Meat Auction will be Saturday, September 27th at the Gospe’s Plan on bringing a side dish and a beverage to share. Time of the party to be announced later. Bring a friend!
-
Ray Giampaoli is selling tickets for the Veteran’s program. The tickets are $20.00 each and it is suggested that you buy two; one for you and one for a veteran.
- Ray Giampaoli and Ann Gospe delivered all the canned “protein” that we collected in August to the Redwood Empire Food Bank last week. They were thrilled! (Pictures Here)
- The Caritas Village project is gearing up. We will be fixing up two “Intake Rooms” for the families that arrive at the shelter so that they are more inviting and less institutional. Patty Kolin and Matthew Henry are leading this project. We are financing this project, partially, with District 5130 funds.
- We are looking into the California Adopt a Highway Program. They have two parts to the program. One is where you donate $500 a month, and you don’t have to do anything. Mainly because those areas have high traffic and are dangerous. The other program is for safer areas where we can safely pick up trash.
- There were two tables of Rotarians at the recent Youth Agriculture Leadership Dinner. Excellent!
- If you buy the ticket booklets to pay for your lunch in advance, please write your name on your ticket. That makes it easier for the check in desk.
- Casey D’Angelo is covering for Laura Stephens for the next two months. If you don’t regularly attend the meetings, contact him when you are coming and if you are missing a meeting.
Recognitions:
- Casey’s youngest son just got married and he made the wedding cake! For those of you who did not know, Casey bakes! This was his 39th wedding cake. He donated $100 to the club.
- Kim Murphy and Dewayne White had their first crush at their vineyard, AND her daughter-in-law, who is in the Air Force, got her doctorate, AND the whole family went to Italy, AND they went horse camping. She donated $100 to the club.
- Keven and Jeri Brown just celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. He donated $200 to the club.
- Peter Holewinski and Mary Frances just celebrated their forty-fifth wedding anniversary.
- Julia Parranto and Rose Frances went to Pismo Beach and donated $100 to the club. Rose injured her shoulder, but she is OK.
Music interlude #2 “Walking on Sunshine” got a couple people to dance… And then it was the introduction of our Guest Speaker, Lance Cottrell of North Bay Angels on angel investing.
(I should have asked how angel inventing compares to watching Shark Tank on CNBC, but I did not.) Lance studied Astrophysics in the 1990’s and started a company called Anonymizer in 1995, one of the earliest commercial VPN and privacy service providers. He sold in in 2008 to Abraxas Corporation. He stayed on as chief scientist. With the money he gained from the sale he went into investing and advising. In 2015 he joined North Bay Angels. Angel investors work with startup companies who want to be big companies in 5-7 years. At that time, they sell or go public. There is a lot of angel investing activity in the North Bay. North Bay Angel Investors do financing in diverse sectors such as food and beverage, fintech, hospitality, construction and more. When angels look to participate in a company, they are investing their own money at very early stage of the business. It will be for a long term, illiquid, high risk, but have the potential to to have very high returns. But many do fail, so you can’t just make one investment. Plan on making at least 20 investments. At least one will be a winner, but it can take many years. To Lance it is fun, exciting, he learns new things, he helps companies, and he gets a high return in the long run. If you are interested in angel investing, he suggests joining an angel group. Don’t invest right way. Watch and learn for a year. Shadow a profile and learn. The successful companies will grow, get acquired or do an IPO.
